One of the things that prompted me to study herbal medicine was the realisation that if I had kids how would I take care of their health. I had no idea what I would do if my kids got sick and knew I would prefer not to give then pharmceutical drugs. I wanted sovereignty over my family’s health and to be able to treat simple ailments at home. I now have two children: age 8 and 15 months. My eldest child has only ever been to a doctor once for a positive diagnosis of chickenpox. Her only other experience of mainstream medicine is that she cut her forehead open when she was 3 and went to hospital to get it stitched back up. She didn’t even know what a doctor/ GP was until she asked me one day as we walked past a doctors surgery. As a mother and herbalist I know it is so important that children are exposed to an alternative health care system so that the mainstream system is not their only known paradigm. Using herbs with children is also a way to help educate them about their own bodies so they grow up knowing sovereignty/ bodily autonomy.
The thing I hear the most from parents is:
I would like to stop giving my child calpol
I would like to use calpol only when absolutely necessary
I would like to have other tools, including herbal medicine, and a broader range of techniques to use to take care of my child’s health
I would like to know what is safe and how to give that, practically to my child/ children
